How decisions are made depends not only on the nature of the content, but also on the available knowledge and level of agreement on aims and means of the decision maker.

Formulating Strategy
(Chapter 8)

​Strategy is a key factor for understanding why, what and how organizations do things. This chapter describes a SET approach to the four steps formulating strategy: Establish the organization’s vision and mission, analyze its internal strengths and weaknesses, analyze its external opportunities and threats, and choose and develop the strategy. A SET approach has greater focus on collaboration than on competition, and on socio-ecological well-being than on a singular focus on financial well-being.

Implementing Strategy
(Chapter 9)

It turns out that formulating strategy is often easier than actually implementing it, which involves developing operational goals and plans, implementing and monitoring them, and then learning from strategy in action. Each aspect of implementation has its challenges, but of particular importance is the idea of strategic learning, which requires members from of the organization to be attuned to and learn from each other and from other stakeholders.

Bruno Dyck enjoys collaborating with managers, scholars, and students to promote SET management principles and practices. He is a Full Professor in the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba, and has published several prize-winning books and articles, and won awards for research and teaching, including the 2019 Expanded Reason Award. Bruno enjoys cycling to work year-round, becoming a vegetarian, buying local goods and services, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

​David Holcomb has assisted in the launch of this website -- developing ideas in conversation with Bruno and turning those ideas into reality. For the past 35 years, business for the common good has been one of David's vocational anchors. He has completed graduate work in both business and theological studies and has worked in both fields. Currently David resides with his family in Milwaukie, Oregon, where he serves as the Director of Finance and Operations with a local non-profit.
